The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the Stadion Race, a foot race 600 feet long. The only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals or until 724 BC. From 776 BC, the Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries.
Ancient Greeks were very big sports fans. So every four years, the Olympic Games were held in the stadium at Olympia.The Olympic Games actually an important part of the religious life of the Greeks. The best athletes in Greece competed in different events that were a part of religious life. The games began with a sacrifice to Zeus, an ancient Greek god. Because the games were extremely religious, any soul that was caught cheating would be banned from the games forever. The sports are still considered one of the major events. A few of the games played in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece are still apart of our modern Olympic games, boxing, weightlifting, and the pentathalon. The pentathalon consisted of five major events: discus throwing, javelin throwing, wrestling, running, and long jumping. Winners received a wreath of laurel or olive leaves to wear on their heads
